Taj Mahal, and I am not talking about the mausoleum in India, which is impressive, but that American blues musician who goes by this name. I first discovered Taj Mahal in High School when I was a DJ on the school radio station. I used to go to the local library to sort through their vinyl collection there and borrow albums for taping at home. I had a rather large collection of tapes at one point as I did a lot of taping off the local underground university station. They were playing a lot of obscure stuff that later became mainstream and I was using that for my DJing at school where I was known for my rather obscure selection of music. There was this album in the bin at the library with a face mask on it title "The Natch'l Blues". Wasn't sure what that was about but tape was cheap and checking things out of the library was cheaper so I took it home and gave it a listen. Well, I liked it - a lot and discovered Taj Mahal. I even saw him when he came to town at one point. I won free tickets from the university radio station. I am sure I must have been one of only a few people that listened to that station as I was able to win tickets quite frequently from them. I remember he put on quite a good show one freezing evening in January in Edmonton at the Student's Union theatre at the University of Alberta. I recall that it was very cold that evening but that is a story for another time. So, in memory of that listening to "The Natch'l Blues" today along with a several other of Taj Mahal's albums.
